A Guide to Prayer Walking
Praise: Because God inhabits the praise of His people, let us begin by praising God. ”Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory!” (Isaiah 6:3). “You are worthy, O Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” (Revelation 4:11). For “worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” (Revelation 5:13). “Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen! (Matthew 6:13)
Ready Yourself: Before we begin to intercede for our city, let us prepare our own hearts. God has promised to “hear from heaven, forgive our sin and heal our land as we humble ourselves and pray and seek His face and turn from our wicked ways”(2 Chronicles 7:14), let us then do what He commands. So “search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there is any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24). “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your loving kindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions and my sin is ever before me. Against you and you only, have I sinned…. Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a right spirit in me.” (Psalm 51:1-4). May we now have clean hands, a pure heart and be a generation who seeks You. (Psalm 24:4-6)
Another part of readying yourself is your realizing that prayer walking is spiritual warfare. Never forget that the “weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God…” (2 Corinthians 10:4) so “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might and put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:10-11). Now you are ready to pray.
Intercede: Now that you are ready, it is time to intercede. As you walk and pray, be sensitive to the leading of the Spirit. What specific burden is He placing in your mind and on your heart right now? As you walk through the city be aware of all that is around you. You will pass by businesses, county and city government offices, churches, houses, Starkville chamber of commerce, sheriff and police stations, jails, courts, schools, and Starkville Daily News. All of these are areas of our city that need prayer. In addition to this, pray for upcoming events in our city: Gay Pride event on March 30, Super Bulldog Weekend and the Cotton District Festival on April 12-14. Pray that God will work powerfully through each one of us to be a witness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. How might God work in us to turn our everyday conversations and activities into opportunities to have gospel conversations with people?
Depend on the Holy Spirit: “With all prayer and petition, pray at all times in the Spirit.” (Ephesians 6:20ff). Again, as you walk and pray, be sensitive to the leading of the Spirit.
Expect God to Work and Satan to Attack: The “effective prayer of a righteous man accomplishes much” (James 5:16 ) as God works through prayer. We must also “be of sober spirit, being on the alert, our adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith. (1 Peter 5:8-9) and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)
End your prayer walk with this: “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21)
